A gadget just for Twitter? WTF!

Continuing in our series of TwitterPeek Q&A, today we answer the question: Why did we make a gadget designed for just Twitter and Twitter alone?

When Flip first launched their line of digital video cameras, critics said they were crazy to make a camera that only does video, especially when so many digital cameras and phones already do that. Years later and millions of cameras sold, Flip has demonstrated that people will buy cool single-function gadgets just because they’re fun to use.

We’ve been getting loads of interesting questions about our TwitterPeek, so we’re using our blog to share our answers with everyone. (Read our first Q&A about who TwitterPeek is for HERE).

Today: How best to use TwitterPeek. One of the cool things about TwitterPeek is that we’ve designed it to be used in different ways depending on what sort of tweeter you are.

Picky Tweeter – Scroll Wheel recommended
You’re selective with the tweets you want to read (you’re a busy person, after all!). With TwitterPeek’s nifty scroll wheel, you can quickly scan and skip to the tweets you most want to read. Hen peck your way through your Twitter feed — just press the Enter key to view the selected tweet.

Omni Tweeter – Keyboard Shortcuts recommended

Q&A on TwitterPeek

Wow! Our humble little TwitterPeek has been really generating a lot of interest, since launching Tuesday. Lots of folks wanted more info so we thought we’d share it here. A common question has been: Who is the TwitterPeek for?

The short answer: TwitterPeek is for the millions of Twitter users who don’t own an expensive smartphone, but still want to experience the fun of Twitter on-the-go.

For the longer answer we thought we’d let leading technology analyst Michael Gartenberg share his thoughts. Here’s what he had to say in a recent Yahoo News article.

“This is clearly not a device for the Twitterati who are debating which is the best Twitter client to use on the iPhone and may have five or six of them,” said Michael Gartenberg, a vice president at Interpret. “This is designed for a user that has embraced Twitter but isn’t interested in the cost or complexity of a smartphone.”

While consumers feel beaten over the head with “there’s an app for that” commercials, in reality only around 25 percent of the mobile-device market is using smartphones. Not surprising when you look at the astronomical costs of owning a smartphone. BillShrink recently published an article on smartphone cost comparison with this handy chart:

Celebrities like Oprah and Ashton have millions of followers that surely fit into this category of non-smartphone users. They’re everyday people and Twitter users who probably are reading and posting from the web mostly.

That leaves millions of consumers using feature phones who have no desire to give them up and may not be interested in e-mail or web access.

“Feature-phone users might not want the other higher-order smartphone functions but have embraced Twitter,” said Gartenberg.

Just hatched
