Peek in Haiti

It’s been nearly two months since the devastating earthquake in Haiti and work to rebuild the country is just beginning. Peek is assisting the efforts by providing Peeks for organizations helping in the relief work.

So far, we’ve donated Peeks to several groups including Sun Energy Power International, a Partners in Health affiliate providing solar systems to Haiti’s hospitals. SunEPI member Christopher Freitas was recently in Haiti assisting the search and rescue effort at the Hotel Montana. Frietas was able to use his Peek throughout the trip for email and text messaging within Haiti and back home to the US.

A few additional Peeks were provided to local Haitians and volunteer workers, many who had been working for over a week with little ability to communicate to the outside world. Local cellphones rarely worked as the capacity of the cell network for voice was overloaded. With Peek, they didn’t have to leave the rescue site to send important updates, coordinate resources and keep in touch with their family and organizations.

There is so much more to be done in Haiti and now Chile, too. We encourage all Peeksters to donate what you can. Walt Ratterman, CEO of SunEPI, was a victim of the devastating earthquake, however, their work continues and members of the SunEPI team will be returning to Haiti in April.

  • You can donate to SunEPI’s work with renewable energy in developing countries at sunepi.org

Sent on the Trail from my Peek

Last year, Peekster Matt Edwards hiked the 2665 mile-long Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada.

During his solitary journey through the wilderness, Matt chronicled his amazing adventure using his Peek to post to his journal on postholer.com.

This year, Matt is taking on a new endeavor — the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail, a 6-month odyssey, which he also plans to blog about with his Peek (yep, there’s signal even in the woods!).

What’s even cooler about Matt’s hike is that he’s pledging it to HikeStrong 2010, a fundraising project that benefits Lance Armstrong’s cancer research Foundation LIVESTRONG.

Matt will begin the hike on May 1st and it will take him about 6 months to complete.

  • Read Matt’s journal starting May 1 at postholer.com – search for name “Iceaxe.”

Congrats and good luck, Peekster Matt!

Watching every penny

It’s not often you can say watching TV will actually help you save money. If you tune in to Headline News on a weekend, you might just catch the Clark Howard Show, a call-in program aimed at helping its viewers save money on every facet of life.

The host is of course Clark Howard, who seems more like your friendly next door neighbor than the shrewd consumer watchdog his is. He’s devoted his days to helping real people unravel financial conundrums and discover ways to save money. From college scholarships to car maintenance, ID theft to refinancing a home, Clark has financial advice and handy tips on just about every subject.

In a recent show, Clark recommended Peek Pronto as a great way to get connected for less. “Let’s face it, corporate types don’t know how much their Crackberry or iPhone costs each month; their company is paying for it! But entrepreneurs who are struggling to make a profit need to watch every penny.”

Clark gave a big thumbs up to Peek’s $19.95 unlimited use monthly fee and no contract policy, which saves consumers $100’s over normal contract cell phone plans. Compare Peek against your current mobile provider at www.Peekonomics.com.

A gadget just for Twitter? WTF!

Continuing in our series of TwitterPeek Q&A, today we answer the question: Why did we make a gadget designed for just Twitter and Twitter alone?

When Flip first launched their line of digital video cameras, critics said they were crazy to make a camera that only does video, especially when so many digital cameras and phones already do that. Years later and millions of cameras sold, Flip has demonstrated that people will buy cool single-function gadgets just because they’re fun to use.flip and twitterpeek

TwitterPeek falls into this category alongside Flip, iPod and PSP. It’s a clever gadget designed to unleash the fun world of Twittering on-the-go. Unless you’ve been hibernating in a cave all year, you’ve definitely heard about Twitter. It’s become a world phenomenon that millions use to share interesting news, thoughts and events as they happen. It’s the best of the web summarized, plus a unique way to message and converse with friends, acquaintances — even buddies you’ve only met in the online world.

TwitterPeek may only do one thing: Twitter, but when you think about it Twitter itself is an infinite world of cool things to do, funny things to read, people to converse with, groups to hang out with, friends, neighbors, businesses…. it’s the entire world funneled through a handy gadget you can put in your pocket.

You might follow the New York Times for breaking news. Lance Armstrong might invite you along on a bike ride through Hamburg. Oprah might let you in on the latest book she’s reading. Or, better yet, you might discover your friends are at coffee shop around the corner offering free scones until 11 am.

You’ll discover an infinite world of conversation with the nifty, pocket-sized TwitterPeek.

If you haven’t already, check out our previous posts: Who is TwitterPeek for and Nifty Ways to Use TwitterPeek.

Q&A on TwitterPeek

twitterpeekWow! Our humble little TwitterPeek has been really generating a lot of interest, since launching Tuesday. Lots of folks wanted more info so we thought we’d share it here. A common question has been: Who is the TwitterPeek for?

The short answer: TwitterPeek is for the millions of Twitter users who don’t own an expensive smartphone, but still want to experience the fun of Twitter on-the-go.

For the longer answer we thought we’d let leading technology analyst Michael Gartenberg share his thoughts. Here’s what he had to say in a recent Yahoo News article.

“This is clearly not a device for the Twitterati who are debating which is the best Twitter client to use on the iPhone and may have five or six of them,” said Michael Gartenberg, a vice president at Interpret. “This is designed for a user that has embraced Twitter but isn’t interested in the cost or complexity of a smartphone.”

While consumers feel beaten over the head with “there’s an app for that” commercials, in reality only around 25 percent of the mobile-device market is using smartphones. Not surprising when you look at the astronomical costs of owning a smartphone. BillShrink recently published an article on smartphone cost comparison with this handy chart:
priceysmartphones

Celebrities like Oprah and Ashton have millions of followers that surely fit into this category of non-smartphone users. They’re everyday people and Twitter users who probably are reading and posting from the web mostly.

picture-26That leaves millions of consumers using feature phones who have no desire to give them up and may not be interested in e-mail or web access.

“Feature-phone users might not want the other higher-order smartphone functions but have embraced Twitter,” said Gartenberg.

TwitterPeek offers these millions of consumers a fun and easy tool that lets them keep up with Twitter on-the-go.
